Decade-in-the-making terminal expansion ushers in a more efficient, sustainable future for Vermont air travel
South Burlington, VT — The Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (Leahy BTV) marked a major milestone with the official opening of Project NexT, as the airport’s newly expanded terminal space became accessible to screened passengers for the first time.
The opening follows a successful Community Open House on March 28th, where community members were invited to explore the new terminal ahead of its debut. Attendees experienced a behind-the-scenes look at new gates, jet bridges, and expanded passenger areas—offering an early glimpse into the future of travel in the region.
“Project NexT represents a transformative moment for Leahy BTV and the region we serve,” said Nic Longo, Director of Aviation at Leahy BTV. “After nearly a decade of planning, we are proud to open a space that enhances safety, efficiency, and sustainability—while delivering an elevated passenger experience and reinforcing the economic vitality of our region.”
A central component of the airport’s Master Plan for close to a decade, Project NexT’s completion marks a significant phase in Leahy BTV’s long-term transformation. The project has reimagined the terminal as a more linear, interconnected facility—improving operational flow, enhancing safety, and aligning with the evolving needs of modern aviation. The expansion introduced upgraded passenger amenities, including new gate areas, jet bridges, and expanded vendor spaces, while also modernizing airline support areas such as baggage claim and storage to meet current equipment and operational demands.
“Project NexT is a powerful example of what long-term vision and partnership can deliver for our community. This investment strengthens our region’s economic development, supports a growing and changing local industry, and reflects our shared commitment to sustainability. As more travelers pass through these doors, they’ll experience not just a modernized airport, but a gateway that truly represents the values and innovation of our region,” stated Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, Project NexT strengthens the airport’s role as an economic engine for the region. Expanded concession and vendor space creates new opportunities for local businesses, enabling Vermont brands to reach a broader audience of travelers. At the same time, increased capacity and improved efficiency positions the airport to attract and sustain additional air service—enhancing connectivity for business travel, tourism, and workforce mobility across the region.
Project NexT was funded primarily through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), with support from Senator Patrick Leahy through FY23 Congressional Directed Spending. The program provided 90% federal funding, with the remaining 10% supported through Passenger Facility Charges (PFC).
“Every time I flew back from Washington to Burlington, I knew I was coming home—to the people, the values, and the spirit that make Vermont so special. This airport has always been a gateway to that sense of place. To see Project NexT come to life, and to have this airport bear my name, is deeply humbling. It represents not just an investment in infrastructure, but in Vermont’s future—welcoming the world while always reminding us where home is,” said Senator Patrick Leahy.
He continued, “I congratulate the entire airport community on the completion of this project and your commitment to not only Vermont’s economy, but a sustainable future for our airport.”
At its core, Project NexT reflects Leahy BTV’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and long-term resilience. Designed with net-zero energy goals, the terminal incorporates solar and geothermal systems to produce as much energy as it consumes. Smart infrastructure—including sensors, data analytics, and AI-driven systems—optimizing energy and water use, improved passenger flow, and reduced waste.
“Project NexT represents a leap forward in how airports can operate more efficiently and with less environmental impact,” said Jeff Bartley, Director of Innovation & Marketing at Leahy BTV. “This investment provides us the tools to enhance both operational performance and the passenger experience, while supporting long-term economic growth for Vermont.”
“At Jacobs, we are driven to create spaces that elevate the everyday while delivering exceptional performance and long-term value to the built environment. Project NexT at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport reflects that commitment, anchored in sustainability from day one and advancing Leahy BTV’s vision to become one of the greenest airports in the nation. Just as meaningful has been the strength of our partnership with the airport team, making this milestone all the more rewarding. We’re proud to stand alongside them today to celebrate the opening of these new gates and the future they represent,” added Craig Rangel, AIA - Design Principal at Jacobs
